Our Flagship Red Wine, Matthias, Hits The Shelves on Jan. 28
Blended wines get a bad rap these days, as many people believe that wines made of a single grape variety are superior. However, as we learned more than 25 years ago through our travels in Austria, the strategic knitting of three stellar wines can create something superb.
It’s a value that’s only reinforced today at Mount Salem Vineyards with our Matthias, a cuvee of Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt and St. Laurent, which has remained our flagship red wine for years.
On Saturday, Jan. 28, we’ll release it once more to its many admirers and subscribers, some who reserved it long before grapes were even growing on the vines. Alongside the Matthias we’ll serve Tyrol-style beef goulash as well as Wachau-style braised chicken. After the Matthias is released to subscribers, it will be available by the bottle while inventory lasts.

To create this wine with flavors of deep, dark berries and other forest fruits as well as firm yet approachable tannins, we first grow and make all three types of wines ourselves. Then, after one year of barrel aging, we blend them and return the wine to barrels for another six months before it’s ready for the bottle.
What culminates is a wine that has been called “Masterful” by Hugh Johnson, whose global wine guide just issued its 43rd edition, as well as “the best red wine ever made in New Jersey,” by a regional wine writer who shared their praise with us off-the-record.
Although we appreciate the acclaim, the lack of Matthias that we have shortly after its release is the best compliment we can ask for. It never lasts long, as it always sells out, and we always wish we had more to share.
